GWR Heritage Trust was set up to continue the traditions of Steam Locomotive restoration in the very buildings once occupied by the Great Western Railway (9 Shop dates back to 1860 and 1873).
We operate a wide range of historic machines that are unique to Swindon. The Crankpin Grinding Machine is the only one of its type in the country.
We aim to specialise even further by bringing on line other machines that have lain forgotten since the closure of the works in 1986.
20 Shop as part of Steam Museum was completely restored during 1999/2000 with the machines being transferred from 9 Shop during August 2000. Virtually all the machines, except 2 (a Craven Wheel Lathe and Small Cylindrical Grinder) are now operational which gives us a workshop second to none in the preservation world.
9 Shop, once J1 Shop the Iron Foundry, is due to for restoration starting March 2002 as part of the BAA McArthur Glen retail expansion. McArthur Glen will be donating a proportion of 9 Shop for Heritage use. The building will receive the high standard of restoration as 20 Shop that again will give us superb working conditions. 9 Shop as now will house the fully reconditioned Wheel Lathes Tyre Profiles, Journal and Thrust Faces and Crankpin plus a large Wheel Press (400 ton capacity) and Tyre Rollers to name but a few. The White Metalling, Boiler Restoration and Fabrication work will also be situated in 9 Shop.
The restoration of 9 Shop is a major undertaking by McArthur Glen and confirms their commitment to the preservation of railway engineering skills for the future.
If you are in the area, please feel free to call in and see us and visit Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway (see the links page). We are situated next to the designer retail outlet (www.mcarthurglen.com).
We provide a wide range of engineering services to cater for most aspects of locomotive restoration, using the ex GWR/BREL jigs and specialised tooling retained when the works closed.
Whilst we specialise in the restoration of Great Western marks of engine, we do cater for most other types including small industrials.
